Anthony Lapwood (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Whakaue, Pākehā) graduated with an MA in Creative Writing with Distinction from Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington in 2018. He holds a BA in English Literature and Film from the same university.

His short fiction collection Home Theatre (Te Herenga Waka University Press) won the Hubert Church Prize for Fiction at the 2023 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, and was a finalist in the Sir Julius Vogel Awards that year.

Home Theatre has been praised as 'beautifully crafted and empathetic' (Sally Blundell), 'intelligent and often surprising' (Brannavan Gnanalingam), and an 'ingenious collection' (Emily Perkins). Nicholas Reid declared that with this book Anthony 'establishes himself as one of our best storytellers.'

Anthony's fiction has been published widely, including overseas, and been broadcast on Radio New Zealand. His stories have featured in the anthologies Hiwa: Contemporary Māori Short Stories, Middle Distance: Long Stories of Aotearoa New Zealand, and Year's Best Aotearoa New Zealand Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Anthony has examined post-graduate creative writing for Massey University. He was a fiction judge for the 2024 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
