Public tours details

The reopening of Te Herenga Waka Marae and the opening of Ngā Mokopuna was an important focus for the University community at the end of last year.

Over 1,500 people attended the whakatuwheratanga (tikanga ceremony) on 6 December, and approximately 350 people joined the open afternoons the following week.

This year, with marae-based whānau now established in Ngā Mokopuna, and Te Kawa a Māui’s teaching programme soon underway, another way for the marae to invite people to connect is through scheduled tours.

On the Haerenga tūmatanui—Public tours page, staff, students, and the wider community can sign up for two types of tours:

Both whare—Te Tumu Herenga Waka (the whare whakairo) and Ngā Mokopuna (formerly the Living Pā)

  • 3 hours (including pōwhiri and lunch)
  • A fee of $20. University students and staff may enter the following code to ensure a free ticket at checkout: THWSTAFFSTUDENT

Ngā Mokopuna only

  • 1 hour
  • No fee

The tours offer a unique opportunity to see and learn about the marae’s whare—their objectives, purpose and special features.

New tour dates will be released monthly.
