Each year Jerome Parrington, Chief Engagement Officer at Living Future NZ Rākeiora (LFNZR), facilitates Healthy Living Buildings courses around Aotearoa NZ.  Looking to connect tauira Māori at Te Herenga Waka with the Living Pā’s aspirations, this year, the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Māori sponsored two Wellington School of Architecture |Te Kura Waihanga tauira—Antonia van Sitter and Whatarangi Winiata — to attend LFNZR’s Wellington course on 5 October 2022.

An intensive workshop, participants share information about the LBC, integrative design processes and follow case studies that demonstrate Aotearoa NZ’s capability to transform the design and construction industry through net positive energy, water, waste, carbon and non- toxicity targets, and deep community engagement practices.

For my thesis I’m exploring self-sustaining living with principles in mātauranga Māori. The interconnected methods and precedents explored in the course were inspiring and invaluable to my studies.

Now I know why there aren’t many LBC buildings. What the framework can achieve blows my mind. Deeply sustainable design is something I’m becoming more passionate about.
