Distance requests

The Distance service allows eligible students to borrow books by post, arrange interloans from other libraries, and receive articles/book chapters by email.

Anyone who is enrolled in a Victoria University of Wellington distance course has access to the Distance service. Postgraduates who live outside Wellington can also apply for access.

How to request a book using Te Waharoa

  1. Go to Te Waharoa. “Sign in” as “VUW Students and Staff” at the top right-hand corner of this page.
  2. Search for the book you would like to request.
  3. Select “Request”.
    For books with multiple volumes, find the volume you would like to request then select “Request”.
  4. Go to “Terms of Use.” If a drop down menu appears, choose the loan period you require.
    For example 3 day loan or 4 weeks
  5. Go to “Pickup Location.” Choose “Home Address.” The book will be posted to you.
    If “Home Address” does not appear as an option in pickup location, please contact the Distance service or phone 0800 700 002 and we will set this up for you.
  6. Choose your “Not Needed After” date.
  7. Select “Request” to complete your request.

Note

  • Only students within New Zealand are able to borrow books from the Library by post.
  • Books will be sent by courier to your street address with a prepaid courier return label. If you only have a PO Box address, books will be posted to you.
  • Two hour loan items may not be borrowed by distance students. However, you can submit a request and you will be sent the table of contents, allowing you to select a chapter to be copied.
  • 3-day loan items may be borrowed. These are issued for 12 days.

How to request an article or chapter using Te Waharoa

Digitization requests can be placed for:

  • Articles from journals
  • Chapter requests

Digitization requests can be placed for one chapter/article or up to 10% from an item.

Requesting book chapters or pages from books:

  1. Go to Te Waharoa. “Sign in” as “VUW Students and Staff” at the top right-hand corner of this page.
  2. Search for the book you would like to request a chapter or pages from.
  3. Select “Digitization.”
  4. Enter the “Chapter/Article Title”, “Start page” or “End page”.
  5. Choose your “Not Needed After” date.
  6. Select “Request”. The chapter will be emailed to you.

Requesting journal articles or pages from a journal:

  1. Go to Te Waharoa. “Sign in” as “VUW Students and Staff” at the top right-hand corner of this page.
  2. Search for the journal title you would like to request from.
  3. If more than one Library appears, select the name of the library that holds the journal you are interested in. For example, Kelburn Library.
  4. Find the volume and issue that contains the article or pages you would like to request.
  5. Select “Digitization”.
  6. Enter the “Chapter/Article Title”, “Start page” or “End page”.
  7. Choose your “Not Needed After” date.
  8. Select “Request”. The article will be emailed to you.

How to request an item not held by the Library

If you want to request an item not held by the Library, use our Interloan service.
