Thesis community and support in LALS
Find out about the support you can get through our thesis group and seminars and through postgraduate student workshops.
In addition to the support and guidance provided by their supervisors, research students at the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (LALS) are part of the School and postgraduate student communities, with multiple avenues for support.
Thesis Group
The Thesis Group in LALS comprises our current MA and PhD students and is organised by students.
The Thesis Group hosts regular workshops and presentations that provide advice and support for different aspects of academic life. Additionally, the Group serves as a social support network and community for students.
LALS research seminar series
LALS hosts weekly research talks during term time. These talks include speakers both within and outside LALS, including PhD students.
These seminars are an excellent way to learn about new research and meet scholars in the field. They also provide a venue for postgraduate students to share their research.
Seminars are also streamed by Zoom, and many are also recorded, with an archive of seminar presentations here.
FGR workshops
The Faculty of Graduate Research also holds regular workshops for Postgraduate Students. These workshops and presentations provide help with things such as time management, developing an academic identity, dealing with imposter syndrome, and other useful advice.
