The application process

Find out what's involved in applying for a PhD or Master's by thesis at our School.

PhD

We assess PhD applications three times per year as part of the standard PhD application process at Victoria University of Wellington. The initial processing of all PhD applications is carried out by the Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR)—this is where you submit your PhD application. The FGR website has a lot of additional information for prospective PhD students which interested applicants should familiarise themselves with.

In LALS, we assess each application sent to us by FGR in our School Research Committee. In our assessment, we consider the quality of the application materials, the applicant’s academic background, and the availability of supervision in the School.

Importantly, no individual staff member in LALS can guarantee you admission into the PhD programme. This means that even if you have identified (and potentially contacted) an interested supervisor, you will still need to submit a formal application to FGR with every other applicant.

Master’s degrees

There is useful information about the Master's by Thesis at this page https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/explore/postgraduate-programmes/master-of-arts-120-points/overview and at this page https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/fgr/masters. It is preferable that you have already spoken with a potential supervisor or the Postgraduate Director before you apply.
