LING Olympiad
The Wellington regional final of the NZ Linguistics Olympiad took place at Victoria University of Wellington on Friday 31 March.
The annual competition involves students from high schools from around the country in language-based problem solving tasks. Seventy-five competitors have already made it through a first round that was run in their schools and the pick of the bunch for each of five regions took part in the second round. As hosts for the Wellington region, the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies welcomed ten students from Nelson College, Onslow College and one home-schooled student. In addition to the two-hour competition, the students attended a LING101 lecture title ‘Who needs grammar?’ and were given three mini-lectures from staff and students in the School.
