Griffin Lilley, Founder of Don't Buy Media graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce, major in Marketing
Springboarding from The Atom and studying entrepreneurship at Victoria University of Wellington, Griffin Lilley’s new company, Don’t Buy Media, launched in London in 2021.
In 2018, Griffin Lilley took a new course called MGMT307 Entrepreneurship in Practice, acted as a rangatahi consultant to the development of Te Matarau-a-Maui (Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s Maori economic development strategy), and, with fellow student Pearl Philavong (now an Innovation Specialist at CreativeHQ), developed a marketing consultancy called DAM at The Atom.
Soon though, Griffin was on the move and an opportunity presented itself to head to the United States just before Covid hit. Once there, Griffin worked with JUV Consulting (a Gen-Z marketing agency), advising brands on how to connect and resonate with Gen Z and the use of new media platforms.
Seeing a gap in the market for firms seeking to connect their brand identities to Gen Z, Griffin started Don’t Buy Media after shortly arriving in London. The company specializes in the creation of short-form content across social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram Reels, Youtube Shorts, and Snapchat. His clients now include The All Blacks, the NFL, JOE Media, Britain’s National Theatre, and Don’t Buy Media’s website and own social media platforms make compelling viewing.
Griffin reflects that “My entrepreneurial journey has been tough and has drawn on every bit of knowledge I’ve gained from inside lecture rooms to The Atom group sessions at Vic to achieve the success I’ve had today. Starting a business isn’t a path I’d recommend to the faint hearted but the opportunities, experience, and people you meet along the way make it one that is definitely worth taking the risks for.”
