Civil Defence Cabinets
Civil Defence Cabinets (yellow or orange) are installed on all campuses. They contain resources that help people to look after each other in an emergency when help from the emergency services or the university are not immediately available.
Cabinets contain items such as:
- disaster first aid supplies
- blankets
- stretchers
- a transistor radio
- torches
- basic personal protective equipment
- some tools.
These cabinets do not replace the need for individual preparedness.
Broken or damaged cabinets
Any cabinet that has been tampered with—glass broken, keys missing, or equipment removed—needs to be audited and restocked immediately. Contact Health, Safety, and Wellbeing to report any damage.
First aid kits
The University has many first aid kits located around each campus.
Each department is responsible for maintenance of their own first aid kits. Someone such as a first aider or administrator should be nominated to monitor kit usage and to ensure that items are replaced as soon as practicable after use. Kits should also be checked at least once every 12 months to ensure it contains the complete set of required items. An inventory list should be kept in the kit and signed and dated after each check.
Used and expired supplies can be replaced by ordering through the University stationery supplier. The list below is only accessible to University staff.
WorkSafe New Zealand have guidelines on first aid (PDF) at work.
More information about first aid training for staff is available on the staff intranet health and safety training page.
