New Zealand ShakeOut
ShakeOut is the national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, taking place on Thursday 28 October 2021.
During the ShakeOut drill, participants drop, cover and hold for up to one minute to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake — Drop, Cover and Hold — and to practise a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation) if in a coastal area.
As part of the ShakeOut drill, staff and students are encouraged to review their own readiness regarding what they need to do during an earthquake, what their plan is if the campus they are on is at risk of a tsunami, and what they can do at home and work to prepare for an emergency.
