Master of Nursing Practice application checklist

When you apply for your Master of Nursing Practice, you’ll need to supply us with some supporting documentation.

We have provided this checklist as a guide to help you prepare for your application. Contact the Wellington Faculty of Health if you have any questions. If you are an international student, please contact The International Office.

When you apply

When you apply through Pūaha, you’ll be asked to provide:

Identification and academic transcripts

You will also need to supply a verified copy of your passport or birth certificate and academic transcripts that show you meet the academic entry requirements for the programme. These are standard requirements for applying to the University. Find out how to submit your identification and transcript.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

You will need to upload a written summary of your work experience and qualifications.

Personal declaration—health and disability

To ensure you meet the Fitness to Practise standards of the Nursing Council of New Zealand and identify anything that may impact on your ability to perform the functions required for the training and practice of nursing, you need to confirm whether you have any learning impairment, medical, physical, or psychological condition that could limit your participation in the Master of Nursing Practice programme. This also allows us to give you the right support to help you succeed in the programme.

Personal declaration—criminal convictions

To ensure you do not have a court conviction that may reflect adversely on your fitness to practise as a nurse you will need to declare any convictions. You will be asked to provide evidence of this after you have applied (see Police/criminal checks).

Details of referees

To assess whether you meet the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s ‘fitness for registration’ requirements, you will need to supply names and contact details for two referees from persons of good standing in the community you live in. Referees will be contacted by email. They should be people who know you well but are not relatives, partners, friends, or flatmates. If possible, one of your referees should be a recent employer, teacher, or lecturer who has known you for at least 12 months.

English language testing (if relevant)

To meet Nursing Council of New Zealand English language requirements, you will need to show you are able to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, employers, and other health professionals. Those applicants for whom English is a second language will require an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – academic version score of at least 7.0 with no individual score of less than 7.0.

After you apply

After your application has been processed and you have received a conditional offer of study you will need to supply to the Wellington Faculty of Health Office:

Preferred interview date

We will contact you with possible dates for your interview. You will need to select your preferred dates which will be confirmed with you once your CV and academic transcript have been reviewed.

Police checks

As part of your application to the programme, you have provided consent for the University to request a police check under the Children’s Act 2014 as a Healthcare student. This is a requirement for Nursing Council of New Zealand and the clinical environments that your clinical learning experiences (CLE) will be taking place in.

It is your responsibility to let the Programme Director know if your police record status changes during your studies. Failure to do so may result in your admission to the University being withdrawn and/or being declined registration from NCNZ.

Proof of immunisation

Our clinical placement providers require proof that you have been immunised to a certain standard. Please download the immunisation screening form, which provides details about what immunisations you will need to have and how to supply proof of them.

First aid certification

In order to attend and participate in your clinical learning experiences (CLE) you must hold a valid standard first aid certificate. If you already hold current certification, please upload a certified copy to Pūaha.

Alternatively, further information about booking a course can be found directly on the Red Cross and St John websites. You are required to complete this course and provide evidence before the programme begins.
