The problem

Commercial paint is made from petrochemicals and is not a renewable product.

Our solution

Invented a new cellulose-based biopolymer as the film-forming component of paint. The synthesis used as a key ingredient a small molecule that can be generated from cellulose itself making the material “doubly-renewable.”

The impact

A patent protecting the intellectual property was completed by our industry partners and more research by our collaborators is seeing cellulose-based products entering commercialisation stages.
