Drive the transition

Until recently, the world’s energy model was based on fossil fuels—but that model is being disrupted. As we respond to climate change, new technologies are changing the way we generate and distribute energy.

It’s now getting cheaper and more efficient to get our energy from renewable sources like solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, and hydroelectric. The global shift to renewable energy is well underway, and you can help drive the transition.

Available qualifications

Gain specialised expertise

The energy revolution calls for a multi-disciplinary approach and a workforce with diverse skills—both technical and analytical. You can equip yourself with these skills by undertaking postgraduate study in Renewable Energy at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Boosting energy resilience

In Aotearoa New Zealand, a major goal is to improve the energy resilience of communities. To achieve this goal, we need to address the “energy trilemma” of security, equity, and environmental sustainability.

Our postgraduate Renewable Energy programmes explore all these issues in depth—you’ll gain industry-relevant expertise based on the latest science in the field.

Find the degree that fits your goals

We offer a range of postgraduate qualifications that allow you to specialise in Renewable Energy. Choose the qualification that best matches your background, commitments, and career goals:

Focus on engineering or policy

In our postgraduate Renewable Energy programmes, you can choose to focus mainly on technical subjects or more on analytical and policy-related subjects.

Engineering-focused courses

Some of our courses focus on the technical aspects of renewable energy systems. You can learn how solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable energy systems work. Or learn how power is stored on the national grid, and how power electronics enable energy to be used efficiently.

Analysis-focused courses

Other courses focus on the economics and sustainability of energy systems and on energy markets and regulation. You can develop techniques for modelling and analysing the sustainability of energy systems. These courses can prepare you for a role as an analyst or policy advisor in an organisation that deals with energy systems.

Prepare for doctoral study

If you see yourself pursuing a career as an academic or specialist consultant, you may consider studying towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). This is the highest academic qualification offered by the University, and it involves original and sustained research under supervision.

The MRE, MSc, BSc(Hons), and PGDipSc each provide a potential pathway to studying a PhD focused on renewable energy.
