Postgraduate Composition/Sonic Arts –
Develop your skills in notated composition, film scoring, music technology or sonic arts to a professional level with postgraduate study.

You'll study under some of New Zealand's most prominent composers and be able to draw from their extensive expertise in areas such as film scoring, orchestral works, live electronic music, musical robotics, sound design/audio post-production and sound installations.

Opportunities for working with students from Film, Theatre, Design, Computer Science and Engineering will give you some of the broadest creative possibilities in New Zealand.
Weekly Composition Workshops give you the opportunity to present your work to fellow students, staff and guests. The feedback you receive and give will help you polish your ideas and approach. You'll also take part in the Postgraduate Music Forum each week, where students discuss each other's research and share and develop new ideas about music.
Career-building opportunities
Make use of staff contacts in the music world—you might get the chance to write for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra or the New Zealand String Quartet, or land a commission to write music for a short film or radio advertisement. You'll also be introduced to the wider community of creative artists, with industry contacts and mentors ranging from professional performers and ensembles through to in-demand film composers.
Staff at NZSM have international contacts that can help give you unprecedented opportunities—recent Composition postgraduates have had works performed in Shanghai, Singapore and Finland, attended conferences in Hong Kong and Italy and written scores for award-winning feature films.
Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) students can make use of the valuable opportunity to be placed in a three-month internship with one of our industry partners.

Extra facilities
You'll be able to take advantage of NZSM's close relationship with other schools at the University such as the School of English, Film, Theatre, Media and Communication, and Art History, the School of Design Innovation, and the School of Engineering and Computer Science, which opens up a wide range of additional facilities for you to use.
Research topics
You'll be joining a dynamic community of research students at Master's and doctoral levels, including a number of international students. Recent postgraduate topics have ranged across a broad swathe of musical creativity, including inventing new mechatronic instruments, composing music to be performed across a network, composing large-scale works for jazz big band and composing an opera.

A postgraduate qualification in Composition/Sonic Arts and the contacts you make along the way will give you the best shot at making composition your career. You might also find work as a teacher, music producer or sound designer, or work in related fields including as an arts administrator, writer or consultant.
