Lu Yang

Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics graduate

Studying Applied Linguistics will definitely make you a more confident and professional language teacher and broaden your view in this field.

Putting theory into practice

The assignments that Lu Yang did as part of her Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics helped to develop her critical thinking and research skills.

Putting the theory she read about into practice helped her to become a more reflective language learner and teacher.

Research opportunities

Lu says the programme gave her the opportunity to pursue her research interests. The highlight for her was a vocabulary research project she did under the supervision of Professor Averil Coxhead.

While developing her research skills and furthering her understanding of the field, she co-authored two publications with her supervisor. These precious experiences helped Lu to gain a scholarship to do PhD study in vocabulary.

A supportive environment

“If you’re interested in language learning and teaching or want to further your study in this field, don’t hesitate to join the Master of Applied Linguistics programme. The lecturers here are very supportive. They answer all your questions and provide constructive feedback on your work.”

At weekly seminars hosted by scholars from the University or from overseas, students are able to broaden their perspective and deepen their interest in Applied Linguistics.

“Studying Applied Linguistics will definitely make you a more confident and professional language teacher and broaden your view in this field.”
