This programme can be studied as a general science qualification, or you can choose to specialise in a specific subject. Find out what qualifications you need to get into the GCertSc and what courses you need to take to complete it.
Programme requirements
For the GCertSc, you’ll need to complete a coherent programme approved by the Head of School.
With approval, you may substitute up to 20 points' worth of courses from other programmes at this university.
You may obtain a GCertSc with a specialisation if your course of study includes 45 points from the 200- and 300-level requirements of the corresponding major subject (see below).

Biotechnology
Biotechnology helps us make products that benefit humanity—they could be new medicines, better crops, or biofuels for a cleaner environment. With this major you’ll learn about molecular biology and the uses of biotechnology. Study the commercial, legal, and political considerations of bringing new developments to the marketplace, and learn to think critically about related issues like gene patents.
Subject requirements
In addition to the programme requirements, for this specialisation you’ll need to complete:
At least 45 points from:
Molecular Biotechnology (BTEC 201)
Biotechnological Techniques and Processes (BTEC 301)
Microbes and their Environments (BIOL 236)
Genetics (BIOL 241)
