Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s Post-Doctoral Māori Fellowship 2022

The Māori Post-Doctoral Fellowship has been awarded to Hine Funaki, of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua, and Ngāi Tahu.

Hine focuses on Education Systems, Mātauranga Māori, Ngā tangata, te porihanga, me ngā hāpori o te Māori (Māori peoples, society, and community). She is passionate about teaching and research and sought this opportunity to extend her knowledge through the Fellowship in ways that reach Māori communities and contribute to transformative change.

Hine will be working on a three-year project, Promising Futures. Te Kawau Mārō: The Lifeworlds of Highly Qualified Māori – A Cohort Study of Māori PhD Students and Graduates, which seeks to expand current understandings, challenges and opportunities experienced by Māori PhD graduates. She will examine the intellectual, cultural, economic, and social contributions they make to whānau, hapū, iwi, and civil society nationally and internationally.

Hine will be based in Te Puna Akopai / The School of Education, working alongside Prof. Joanna Kidman (Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Raukawa) and the Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) Te Kupenga o MAI programme, and the Research Office Rangahau Māori team.
