- Last week a seminar was delivered under the auspices of the Ministry of Education with no Faculty of Education/Victoria University input. We understood that it was to assist graduates to win teaching roles, including tips, hints and information to ensure readiness for teaching
- The figures presented at the seminar actually look OK long term for new teachers – this is because there are a high number of current teachers in the 60-64 age bracket and a birth rate that is 11% higher than the previous five years
- In terms of the figures for new teachers getting permanent positions against those in relieving positions, it has become practice in NZ for most new primary teachers begin their careers in Long Term Relieving positions and these statistics are included in the overall “relieving teacher” figures. In reality most long term relieving positions become permanent, and they do count towards registration.
- Schools often appoint new graduates with these contracts, and Schools tend to create long term relieving positions when they experience roll growth if they are unsure of future student numbers because they want to avoid redundancy issues in the future.
- There are still teaching jobs – this morning there were 380 year 0-8 teaching jobs listed in the Education Gazette.
- Some of this year’s Graduate Diploma students have already successfully secured jobs for 2013
- Positions will continue to come up between now and the start of the school year, and new primary school classes are often created part way through the year as more 5 year-olds join the school.
- It helps if you are prepared to move to where the work is, as with any occupation.
- Very few students begin their study with a guarantee of employment and teaching is no different, especially given current economic circumstances.
