Barrie Gordon - Fulbright Recipient
Congratulations to Dr Barrie Gordon, who has been selected by Fulbright New Zealand for a Fulbright Scholar Award in Education Research. As a 2013 Fulbright Scholar Barrie will spend three months from September 2013 at the Northern Illinois University situated 100km from Chicago.
Barrie will be hosted to carry out research on a series of afterschool, sport based, programmes aimed at teaching at-risk youth personal and social responsibility. Chicago and the Northern Illinois University has been the centre of research on the Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model for many years and have a number of well established programmes running in the community. The research will examine similarities and differences in the ways TPSR is taught in the USA and NZ; what is best practice when implementing TPSR in after-school programmes; and what pedagogical approaches best facilitate transfer of learning to student’s lives outside of the gym.
Barrie was selected for this award through a competitive process, acknowledging both the excellent qualifications that he brings to this research but also to the quality of the research proposal that he submitted. We are honoured by having another of our academic staff recognised by a top award such as this, and opportunities to conduct research and spend time at universities overseas benefit both the individual staff member who participates but also have a ripple effect across our faculty, students, and programmes.
This is great news, so please do congratulate Barrie when next you see him!
