Explore the programme structure and courses for the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Primary).

Waharoa entry to old School of Education

The Graduate Diploma programme consists of 150 points. All student teachers participate in six courses over the year. Each course supports student teachers’ progress towards meeting the Ngā Paerewa|Standards for the Teaching Profession (in a supported environment). Akopai/Professional practice courses support student teachers’ knowledge about the professional practice of teaching, the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education, and te reo me te ao Māori.  Te Kahu o te Ao/Learning Design courses support students to engage with curriculum learning areas and pedagogies, and four cross-programme priorities:

  • Mātauranga-a-iwi
  • the Digital Age Educator
  • Education for Pacific Peoples
  • Inclusive Education.

First half year courses

Akopai 1: Professional Practice 1 - TCHG 315

  • This course focuses on Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnerships, professional learning and professional relationships.

Te Kahu o te Ao Tahi—Learning Design 1 - TCHG 325 (Maths, PE, Technology) and Learning Languages

  • This course focuses on developing skills and knowledge for learning-focused cultures, design for learning and cross-programme priorities of Mātauranga-a-iwi and the digital age educator.

Te Kahu o te Ao Rua—Learning Design 2 - TCHG 326 (English, Health, Visual Art)

  • This course focuses on developing skills and knowledge for learning-focused cultures, design for learning and cross-programme priorities of Mātauranga-a-iwi and the digital age educator.

Te Kahu o te Ao Toru —Learning Design 3 - TCHG 327 (Maths and Statistics, Science, Music)

  • This courses focuses on professional relationships, design for learning (with a focus on learning environments and social, cultural and ecological issues) and cross-programme priorities of inclusive education and education for Pacific peoples.

Te Kahu o te Ao Wha—Learning Design 4 - TCHG 328 (English, Social Studies, Drama/Dance)

  • This courses focuses on professional relationships, design for learning (with a focus on learning environments and social, cultural and ecological issues) and cross-programme priorities of inclusive education and education for Pacific peoples.
