About us

The School of Engineering and Computer Science researches and teaches programmes at the leading edge of digital technology, engineering and science.

Where the Internet started in New Zealand

The School of Engineering and Computer Science is where student Nat Torkington developed New Zealand's first website.

Professor John Hine was instrumental in negotiating with NASA to get our first undersea cable—enabling New Zealand to beat Australia to be the first country in the Pacific region with a direct connection to the US Internet.

The inter-university network that Professor Hine developed evolved into the backbone of the New Zealand Internet until it was replaced by commercially available services from 1996.

Learn from the best

Our experienced, international staff have wide networks in research and industry, and are actively engaged in ground-breaking research.

We are passionate about supporting students through engaging lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions, and mentoring them as they follow their natural curiosity into new areas of study and research.

A bright future

Engineers and computer scientists are some of the most sought-after professionals in today’s society, with interesting and well-paid careers. You could plan new communication networks, build autonomous robots, design new computer games, or develop medical technologies.

If you are looking for a future where you can make a real difference—and one which is rewarding and enjoyable—come and join us in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Cutting-edge facilities

The School houses state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories in the Alan MacDiarmid and Cotton Buildings on Kelburn campus.

These facilities enable our students to develop practical skills across many different areas, such as robotics, wireless networking, and artificial intelligence. The modern  university campus provides many attractive places for students to study and exchange ideas.
