Printing

Students can print from any student computer on campus, and from mobile devices.

What you should know about printing at the University

The University has multi-function printers and scanners across each campus and halls of residence. These are for you to print course materials, essays, and scan and send documents. This page sets out how to use them, what it costs, and some other questions you may have.

Multi-Functional Device printers (MFDs) are situated across all campuses for students to print course materials and essays, and to scan and send documents.

How to print

In 2025, we upgraded all our printers and photocopiers across our campuses. To print on the new devices:

  1. Download UniFlow from your app store or go to www.print.wgtn.ac.nz.
  2. Once installed, select SecurePrint VUW from the dropdown menu of your printer options when you're printing something from your device.
  3. Swipe your University ID on any printer (yes, any printer!) to release your items.

Note that you will need to accept the licence and account terms and conditions when installing the UniFlow software.

Collecting your printing

When printing from student computers or using wireless printing, your print job will be uploaded and held on a server for 2 hours. During this time you can collect your print job from any printer with a card reader attached. Swipe your student identity card and the print job will be released.

If you're printing from a personal device, go to the Student Printing Portal and follow the instructions. The print job can be collected at any printer on campus.

Your printing account

Printing charges for students are:

  • black and white printing—5 cents per page, per side.
  • colour printing—10 cents per page, per side.
  • scanning and emailing—no charge.

Your account must be in credit before you can print.

Each trimester the University subsidises students with a $5 printing credit. This is maintained in a separate wallet. At the start of the trimester, this crdit will be added for enrolled students who have paid their fees. If you need to print more than this, you can top up your credit by visiting the payment portal.

Crediting your printing account

You can top up your account by visiting the Printing funds portal which is accessible from any personal device or onsite by using the link on any student desktop computers.

Who can see your scans and prints?

Most of the time, no one will see what you print or scan, however, a small number of university staff have access to the queue and can access prints and scans. This access is for those staff to provide service support and identify and managing any breach of university policies.

Sometimes we also need assistance from third-party service providers, including Canon, who will have access to your printing and scans.

What can you use them for?

Your printing and scanning on University systems is subject to our Student Conduct Statute, Acceptable Use of Information System Statute and Privacy Policy.

You must not use our printers or scanners for anything that is illegal.

Do not use these printers for any sexually explicit material, unless such use is permitted by the University’s Dealing with Sexually Explicit Material Procedure and is for purposes of the University (i.e. research or study).

We understand that sometimes people use University printers and scanners for minor personal use. That said, please do not use these printers for any sensitive documents that could result in loss or harm. For example, do not scan credit cards or passports. If you do so, this is entirely at your own risk and the University disclaims all responsibility.
