VR Storytelling and Creative Tasks for Preserving Cultural Heritage: Taking Historical Chinese Architectural Pattern as an Example
Despite ongoing efforts, the preservation of cultural heritage is still facing challenges. Due to a limited understanding of cultural stories and context, it is difficult for people, especially young people, to fully appreciate cultural heritage. The absence of in-depth knowledge about the stories and traditions embedded in these heritage elements often creates a gap, making it challenging for young people to recognise cultural value and importance. Moreover, some cultural heritage is becoming disconnected from contemporary society and future relevance, leading to a gradual loss of vitality.
Grace’s research focuses on supporting the preservation of cultural heritage by means of VR approaches, aiming to enhance young people’s engagement and understanding of cultural heritage. The VR approaches in this research are intended to convey cultural knowledge and bring new vitality to cultural heritage. It provides an open virtual environment that allows users to employ their imagination. This research takes the Historical Chinese Architectural Pattern (HCAP) as an example. HCAP, referring to the colourful decoration on architectural structures such as beams, columns, brackets, roofs and walls, represents a valuable and distinctive form of cultural heritage.
To explore how VR approaches can enhance engagement and understanding of cultural heritage, a VR application is developed in this research, allowing users to gain knowledge about HCAP and interact with virtual objects.
This research is expected to explore new VR approaches that connect cultural knowledge and contemporary perspective, with the purpose of supporting the preservation of cultural heritage.
