Course content
This course looks at the more advanced aspects of geographic information systems (GIS). It is expected that students will have completed GEOG 215, GEOG 415 or an introductory course in GIS at another institution.
Optional field trips will form part of the course and may include industry visits or data collection.
The course has three primary aims:
- To give you a more detailed and critical understanding of geospatial methods and how they are used
- To expand your knowledge of geospatial software through guided practicals; and
- To enrich your written and verbal communication skills which are vital in any use of geospatial methods.
This course is optimised for in-person delivery and requires regular in person attendance at the lab workshop sessions.
Lectures for this course will be delivered in person. Recordings of the lectures will only be available for two weeks after the lectures and for a period of at least two weeks in advance of the final assessment.
The use of AI tools are not permitted in this course. Students are also not permitted to submit previously submitted work (i.e. self plagiarism).
Course learning objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
Appreciate and describe the scope, limitations and challenges of geospatial methods in real world applications.
Record, enter, manipulate and analyse geographic data.
Understand the complexity of data issues concerning the acquisition, creation, quality assurance, management and appropriate analysis and visualisation of spatial and attribute data.
Communicate GIS and remote sensing knowledge effectively.
Demonstrate an understanding of spatial information by identifying and applying appropriate geospatial techniques to the solution of a practical applications.

Class representative
The class representative provides a useful way to communicate feedback to the teaching staff during the course. They also work with the VUWSA Education Office on any academic issues that arise in their course. Reps are elected by students by the third week of classes every trimester. Being a rep requires a weekly commitment.
