CMIC staff present latest work "Piku Piku Interpolation: An artist-guided sampling algorithm for synthesizing detail applied to facial animation” at SIGGRAPH Asia 2019

CMIC present a new sampling algorithm that adds realism to early-stage facial animation by recreating detail observed FACS data extracted from videos.

CMIC post-doc researcher Richard Andrew Roberts, Rafael Kuffner dos Anjos,  CMIC co-deirector Ken Anjyo and adjunct associate proffessor J.P. Lewis had the opportunity to present their latest research talk at the SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Technical Briefs program in Brisbane, Australia.

The system samples FACS data to create detailed facial motion from early-stage animation

Fine scale detail added to animated sequences can considerably improve the quality of human motion. We propose a system that applies a non-parametric sampling algorithm to create detailed movements from early stage facial animation. By applying our system like an interpolation scheme, animators can create detailed facial movements from simple inputs, which reduces the time required to produce production-ready animation. We examine the results of applying our system to create detailed movements when sampling from FACS data that we extract from video.

Richard and J.P. Lewis presented one more talk with their international research collaborators at the Technical Briefs program. In this talk, we take inspiration from keyframe animation to compute what we call the Saliency diagram of the animation which can be used to analyze the motion.
