Seventeen members of Victoria University of Wellington’s International and Engagement teams recently took part in a hands-on workshop of Chinese language and culture, led by the Confucius Institute.

Seventeen members of Victoria University of Wellington’s International and Engagement teams recently took part in a hands-on workshop of Chinese language and culture, led by the Confucius Institute.

The workshop was a great way for the University’s staff from both the Institute and the International department to get to know one other while enjoying some language and calligraphy practice and some Chinese tea.

CI VUW teacher Lu Chunxiao started the workshop with some Chinese Pinyin (transliteration) instruction, then an introduction to the four tones of the Chinese language, explaining that meanings could be different according to tonality. Staff each adopted a common Chinese surname and a job position and practised what they had learnt with each other. After an hour’s practice all were able to do a self-introduction and respond in Chinese when exchanging business cards.

Language work was followed by some Chinese classical music and a tea ceremony. While Teacher Lu was performing the tea ceremony, Mandarin Language Assistant Li Yinghui spoke about the various types of Chinese tea. Great interest was shown in teas which helped to lose weight and Teacher Lu was asked to brew some for the class. Wang Yiqiu, another Mandarin Language Assistant, conducted a calligraphy lesson whereby the evolving history of Chinese characters was explained. People marvelled at the culture embodied in Chinese characters, and, with the help of the instructors did a spot of calligraphy themselves.

There was applause for the CI VUW team from their Victoria International and Engagement team colleagues following the useful, interesting and enjoyable Chinese workshop.

惠灵顿维多利亚大学孔子学院为维大高级职员举行“实用汉语与中国文化体验”专场活动

新西兰惠灵顿维多利亚大学孔子学院在惠灵顿地区中小学可谓无人不知，无人不晓，这良好的口碑得益于汉语教师志愿者项目的成功运行和各类中国文化活动在中小学多年的推广。然而在与维多利亚大学教职员工的交谈中，偶尔还是会被问到“孔子学院主要做什么”之类的问题。

为加强维大孔院与维大内部各部门间的交流，加深维大教职员工对汉语及中国文化的了解， 8月26日孔院为维大对外事务部的17位高级职员举行了 “实用汉语与中国文化体验” 专场活动，维大分管国际事务的助理副校长以及维大国际部主任也在其中。

此次活动汉语语言、茶艺展示部分由维大孔院汉语教师鲁春晓完成。汉语课从几个简单的发音入手，当学生们发音得到充分肯定后，加入声调并解释声调在汉语中区分意义的重要作用，所有人连声感叹汉语的神奇。而后，每个人选择了一个中国常见姓氏和一个与自己工作相关的职位，完成汉语名片。经过形式多样的语言操练，仅仅一小时，所有学员已经可以完成自我介绍、名片交换等语言交际内容，甚至还可以表达：“我在新西兰惠灵顿维多利亚大学工作”。

伴随着《云水禅心》悠扬的旋律和茶艺展示，孔院汉语助教李迎慧向各位学员展示并介绍茶的种类、工艺等相关知识，同时讲解茶艺展示的流程及背后所蕴含的文化。当提及一些茶有减肥的功效时，学员们兴奋地询问今天是否可以泡神奇的茶给他们。

讲座第三部分—中国书法体验，由汉语助教王亦秋主讲。她用一组生动形象的图画汉字讲解汉字的构造、演变，并让学员们根据字形猜汉字。几个回合下来，大家直呼：“中国人太有智慧了！”随后，笔墨纸砚登场，有的尝试“新西兰”，有的尝试自己的中国姓氏，还有的对汉字“呆”的字形结构情有独钟。

活动结束后，所有职员抱以热烈掌声感谢孔子学院团队的努力，孔院院长陈雯女士的收件箱里也多了一封充满热情的感谢信。
