2015 November Literary Month: Poetry and Translation
Wrapping up the Confucius Institute’s cultural year, we featured Dr Jonathan Stalling - poet, writer and Curator of the Chinese Literature Translation Collection at the University of Oklahoma . One of the foremost translators of Chinese literature and a leading innovator of bilingual translation and language teaching, Jonathan founded Chinese Literature Today and heads the Center for the Study of China’s Literature Abroad at Beijing Normal University. While in Wellington he gave the Confucius Institute’s Lecture on ‘ Chinese Literature Abroad: Translation, Publication, Distribution and Documentation’ .
Jonathan’s visit to Wellington, organised by the Confucius Institute, was also the occasion for a poetry reading by him, joined by Chinese and New Zealand poets Zheng Danyi, Ya-Wen Ho, Madeleine Slavick, Liang Yujing and Nina Powles. The event celebrated the translation of Victoria University Institute of Modern Letters’ 25 Best New Zealand’s Poems and their first-ever translation into Chinese. This inaugural literary translation willbe launched in early 2016 and is a collaboration among five parts of Victoria University - the Confucius Institute, New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation, Chinese Programme, IIML and Wai-te-ata Press.
