Professor Ilan Noy confirmed as Deputy Director of new climate change research programme

Director of the Climate Change Research Institute Professor Dave Frame has confirmed Professor Ilan Noy as the Deputy Director of the new Endeavour Research Programme Extreme Events and the Emergence of Climate Change.

The Emergence Programme takes a deeper look at how hard New Zealand will be hit by one of climate change's most frightening calling cards: extreme weather events.

Extreme weather events are already changing due to climate change, and New Zealand is already suffering for it. For example, modelling of a drought over the summer of 2012 and 2013 showed that the $1.3 billion disaster had been about 20 per cent more likely to occur today than in the late 1800s.

In the new, $10m programme, Professor Noy will be leading two work streams. His team’s first step is compiling a comprehensive historical disaster database, and later in the programme, he’ll be projecting future extreme weather losses for our economy given climate change.
