Five reasons to study business in Wellington

Hear from our students as they describe just some of the many reasons they chose to study business in Wellington.

We asked undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Wellington School of Business and Government (WSBG) why they chose to study business in Wellington. Aside from the convenience of living in the middle of the country, many students told us it was the city itself that they came for, both the lifestyle and the career prospects that come from studying in a capital city. They were also drawn by the University’s reputation. As we say: Wellington is New Zealand’s centre of innovation, entrepreneurship, policymaking, and creativity.

1. Where business and government meet

Because Wellington is the capital city and also where the government is, you're studying in the heart of business in New Zealand.

WSBG is located a stone’s throw from Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeal, minutes from government departments and the CBD, and in the centre of the action. Students can leverage WSBG’s proximity, and the relationships and expertise of our academics, to not only gain a qualification, but also a foothold in their desired sector.

2. The city in the centre

Location was the clincher.

Wellington is a special city. It’s super walkable, and it can feel like there’s only one degree of separation – you often see people you know out and about. There’s a kind of magic to this place—we love it even in a howling southerly when we find umbrellas in the rubbish bins along Lambton Quay. We’re spoilt for choice for coffee, food, bars, shops. The Wellington waterfront is right there, the Botanical Gardens are just next door to our campuses, we have green spaces, laneways, Sunday markets where many students stock up for the week with produce, and tuck into food truck brunches. With plenty of public transport options, and the Pipitea Campus being just beside the railway and bus station, you don’t need to have a car while you’re studying.

3. An innovation and tech hub

I want to get into technology, and Wellington has many interesting tech companies.

Home to start-ups and tech shops, Wellington has a large innovation hub that is unmatched in Aotearoa New Zealand in its connectedness to government. With high demand across government for people with strong IT skills, from data science to business analysis, there’s never been a better time to study business—your gateway to an IT career. WSBG academic staff are strongly connected to the wider industry and students benefit from their contacts and experience through opportunities to do hands on research projects and to network.

4. A leading business school

One of the best business schools in New Zealand.

Lots of students told us they chose to study in Wellington due to the reputation of the Wellington School of Business and Government and the University generally. WSBG is among just 1 percent of business schools worldwide to hold the 'Triple Crown' of international accreditations and holds accreditations from a variety of international academic and professional bodies.

5. I have a life here

Because I live here

Whether you’re starting out a BCom or beginning an Executive MBA, being able to study where you have a life is important. Many of our students, particularly our postgraduates, are studying on top of demanding full-time jobs, often with children and busy family lives. Our range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes mean you don’t have to choose between keeping your Wellington life and study.
