Environmental Management Accounting is going to be an important aspect to financial management and critical to solving challenges posed by the climate crisis. As we know, not all heroes wear capes, and in this case, it turns out they wield spreadsheets.

As countries around the world work to tackle our shared climate crisis, there has been a rise in anti-pollution laws, and an increase in disclosure and reporting requirements on climate impact, including the New Zealand Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act 2019. These laws are fundamentally changing the way we operate. From small businesses to large organisations and governments, climate impact can be measured in several ways, but money is a crucial factor. Not only for reporting but also in managing costs, informing and impacting policy, and contributing to rich data collection. Accountants will be instrumental in creating value for business but also in looking at ways that they can reduce their environmental footprint, proving economic advantage and benefits for the climate.
