Tutoring in the School of Information Management
Information about applying to become a tutor at the School of Information Management.
Tutors are an integral part of course delivery and provide a fundamental and supportive link between lecturers and students. We’re looking for passionate 200 to 300-level students, postgraduate students, and BCom/BSc graduates with a major in Information Systems (or Data Science for DATA101) who have preferably obtained a grade of B+ or higher in the courses they would like to tutor.

Benefits of becoming a tutor
There are many benefits to becoming a SIM tutor, including:
- enhancing your leadership, people management, and time management skills
- developing your presentation and verbal communication skills, including the ability to give effective feedback
- receiving a competitive pay rate and a shared office space at Pipitea and Kelburn
- meeting other tutors and being part of an academic community.
Experienced tutors also have the opportunity to progress their role into a Head Tutor position which offers more experience and a higher pay rate.
Tutor training and support
The following mandatory paid training is provided (hours might vary):
- 1.5-hour SIM Tutor Orientation
- 3-hour Introduction to Tutoring Workshop
- 2-hour Marking and Feedback Workshop
- 1-hour Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Workshop
- 1.5-hour Inclusive Tutoring Workshop
- 45-min Getting Ready for Tutoring on Nuku self-paced online training
- 1-hour Tutoring Online self-paced training.
Most courses will have a Head Tutor who will be available to support tutors in any of the tutoring tasks.
Duration and location of employment
Tutors are contracted each trimester to take two to four tutorial/workshop groups in a course. Contracts start the week before trimester starts and conclude at the end of the assessment period. Tutorials/workshops start in week one or two of the trimester depending on the type of course. All tutors need to be available during the week before the trimester begins for training and orientation, and the first meeting with the course coordinator and other tutors can occur before the trimester starts.
Tutorials/workshops for 100-level courses are held at the Kelburn Campus. All 200- and 300- level tutorials and workshops are held at the Pipitea Campus.
