Parent use of specific support techniques

This study examined the way five mothers of young autistic children used ESDM techniques.

The mothers were introduced to 18 specific ESDM techniques. We examined how often they used these before, during, and after a 12-week parent training programme.

Main findings

• All five mothers used more ESDM techniques during the training compared to before the training.
• The ESDM techniques which each mother used the most and the techniques in which they showed the most improvement varied.
• Some ESDM techniques were more strongly related to higher child engagement and communication than others.
