Matthew Lloyd, Ngāi Te Rangi, graduated from Hutt International Boys’ School and enrolled  to study Architecture at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s Te Aro Campus near Cuba Street, the heart of Wellington’s cultural vibrancy.

“Wellington is a great place to study; you can walk everywhere. It is a welcoming community and is close to the beach and ngahere (forest). Great for a dive or a hike.

“There are many creative people in Pōneke, and you can walk down any street, meet new people, and see different forms of creativity.”

The buzz of the city and the sense of community at Te Aro Campus supports Matthew’s mahi to become an architect.

“Everyone in the studio works hard and together, creating friendships with many people. The events, studio culture, and tutorials make it easy to meet new people.

“Attending events introduced me to many professionals in the design community while participating in studio activities allowed me to build relationships with not just students but tutors as well. These experiences have helped me form a supportive network that I know will extend into my career.

“Beyond academics, the student communities and clubs made it easy to meet new people and feel connected, which was especially important during my first year.”

The Māori Design and Environments specialisation is the only architectural programme in Aotearoa New Zealand that allows students to focus more deeply on mātauranga Māori.

“The programme provides a solid foundation in architecture while allowing me to explore areas that interest me, like Māori design and furniture and tutoring DSDN 172 Whakapapa Design.

Matthew is completing the final year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies in 2025.

“I’m excited to deepen my knowledge and skills in architecture, especially Māori Design and Environments, which will allow me to explore my whakapapa more deeply.”
