Weir House seismic work information

Learn more about the seismic work planned for the William Weir Wing at Weir House.

Background

The University has undertaken an ongoing process of seismic risk management across its buildings over the last 15 to 20 years.

The William Weir Wing at Weir House is in the process of being seismically retrofitted as part of our ongoing programme of work to earthquake-strengthen our buildings.

Remedial works began over the summer, noting heritage considerations and the need to cause minimum disruption to students.

Information on the current work

The works are predominately in the ground beside and beneath the William Weir building and consist of implementing new concrete beams and ground anchors.

All work in the building itself is confined to the ground floor and lower ground floor.

Internal work and work that may generate vibrations is largely complete and planned to be finished before our 2025 residents' move-in date.

Some work outside the building will continue into Trimester 1—such as foundation work on the main entrance and landscaping work on the Weir House grounds and gardens.

The images below show the current appearance of the main entrance and front landscaping. These images were taken on 4 February 2025.

During working hours, there may be some disruption in the form of:

  • minor construction noise, dust, and disturbance with some contractor hoardings on-site in restricted outdoor areas, where finishing off works will be undertaken
  • a noticeable presence of construction vehicles entering and leaving the area during the works period.

Engagement with 2025 residents on planned work

If the work extends further into 2025, residents will receive advance communications by email and the hall’s social media channels.
