Our social media commitment
The University’s social media presence allows us to connect with our community. Learn more about how we capture and share content online.
At Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, we often share glimpses into student life on our campuses and feature staff and students on our social media channels. It’s important you know how the University interacts with our online community and what you can expect from us when it comes to capturing and sharing your moments.
We have a range of social media channels, which are listed in our online directory.
Engaging with you
We love hearing from our students and community! We’re here to:
- Answer your questions and provide support through our social media channels.
- Share news, events, and updates about what’s happening at the University.
- Highlight your achievements and showcase the vibrant student life on campus.
- Showcase our research excellence and contributions from our academic staff members.
Our values and house rules
We encourage all social media users to interact with each other in ways that reflect our core values, and in meaningful ways on our social media channels, including within the comment threads.
It probably goes without saying, but we aren’t responsible for comments or posts made by others. We reserve the right to screen and remove any content we deem inappropriate or contrary to our values. This includes things like off-topic replies, spam and unrelated commercial content, as well as content that harasses, abuses, threatens, or in any other way violates the rights of others. A follow or a like also doesn’t necessarily mean we endorse all the views of that person or organisation.
The University reserves the right to block anyone on relevant social media channels who does not follow these guidelines. We also reserve the right to act on complaints from our community and remove posts that are irrelevant or excessive. We also will always act in accordance with our privacy notice, other relevant laws, and the applicable terms of service or content guidelines of the relevant social media platform.
Content creation
Our social media commitment also applies when we’re creating new content for social media, including content that might feature you. We love showing off what student life is like on campus, but want to make sure we’re up front and transparent when we do this. Here’s how it works:
- We often take photos or videos at University events. By being part of our events, you might appear in our photos or videos.
- At other times, we might ask you if you would like to feature on our social media channels—specifically for a photo, video, quote, story, or other content.
- We will always let you know when we’re taking photos, videos, or otherwise creating content (though the social media T-shirts and our equipment are a bit of a giveaway!).
- If you don’t want to be in any images or videos, just let one of our team know.
- If we have taken a photo or video of you which is shared on one of our channels, you can always change your mind later and ask us to remove this by sending us a DM or emailing social-media@vuw.ac.nz.
- Don’t worry—we won’t sell your content or let it be used for commercial purposes outside the University without your express permission.
If we have taken an awesome photo or video of you, you’re welcome to share this on your own channels and you can always tag us to share too—@vicuniwgtn.
Competitions
We sometimes run competitions on our social media channels—keep an eye out to enter these. But, of course, there will be terms and conditions for these, and by entering the competition we will take it that you have agreed to these.
Getting involved
We encourage you to:
- Tag us in your posts (@vicuniwgtn) and use our hashtag (#VicUniWgtn) to get featured on our official accounts.
- Share your experiences and stories with us—we love showcasing and celebrating our community!
We’re here to make our social media spaces fun, informative, and a true reflection of our amazing community. If you have any suggestions, concerns, queries or other feedback about our social media commitment, or anything you’ve seen on our social media, reach out to us by either sending a message on any of our channels, or an email to social-media@vuw.ac.nz.
