Using online content
Online material from websites is protected by copyright.
Best practice
Provide the electronic link or URL to students. This allows students to access the material directly from the online site either from Talis or Nuku. It requires no further action to comply with copyright or licenses.
Providing online content to students
If you want to provide students with a copy of material from the internet via Nuku you can do so under section 44A of the Copyright Act so long as the work:
- is displayed in a frame/identifier
- identifies the author (where possible) and source of the work
- states Victoria University of Wellington as the user
- includes the date of storage
- is restricted to authenticated users
- is deleted when no longer relevant to the course.
Using Talis (course readings)
Talis is ideal for managing and providing links to online material to students.
Providing internet content in hardcopy
Material from the internet can only be supplied to students in hardcopy (e.g. print outs or print course readings) where:
- the material is recorded in Talis, and
- the terms and conditions allow, or
- you have permission from the copyright holder, or
- the work is available under a Creative Commons License or is an open access resource, or
- where the amount copied is no greater than three percent (3%) or three pages of the total work (unless that would mean the whole work is copied, in which case only 50 percent can be copied).
