Master of Commerce
Overview
The School of Management offers a Master of Commerce (MCom) degree in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations or Management at postgraduate level. There is a 180-point MCom (for students who have not yet completed honours or an equivalent qualification) and a 120-point MCom (for those who have).

180-point Master of Commerce
The 180-point MCom follows on from a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in the same subject area, or a similar degree. In addition to 90-120 points of taught courses (including study of relevant research methods), it involves a research thesis or one or two small research projects. This degree is a good choice for graduates in HRIR or MGMT seeking to complete a Master’s degree in three trimesters (the maximum time allowed is four years).
Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations
To enrol in the 180-point MCom in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations you need to have completed either:
- a BCom degree including HRIR 320 and either 30 further HRIR 300-level points or 15 further HRIR 300-level points and 15 MGMT 300-level points, with a grade average of B or better in the 200 and 300-level HRIR and MGMT courses; or
- a suitable alternative degree (or the equivalent in extensive and appropriate practical, professional or scholarly experience).
To complete the 180-point MCom in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations, you need to take either:
- HRIR 401, 402, MGMT 404, 405, 411
- one further course from (HRIR 411-412, MGMT 401-418)
- HRIR 592 (90 point thesis)
Or
- HRIR 401, 402,
- MGMT 404, 405, 411, 430
- one further course from (HRIR 411-412, MGMT 401-418)
- and either:
- HRIR 530 and 531, or
- One of HRIR 530, 531; 30 further points at 400-level or above, including at least 15 approved points at 500-level.
Management
To enrol in the 180-point MCom in Management you need to have completed either:
- a BCom degree including MGMT 320 and 30 further MGMT 300-level points, with a grade average of B or better in the 200 and 300-level MGMT courses; or
- a suitable alternative degree (or the equivalent in extensive and appropriate practical, professional or scholarly experience).
To complete the 180-point MCom in Management, you need to take either:
- MGMT 404
- three courses from (MGMT 401, 403, 405-418)
- two further courses from (MGMT 401-489, HRIR 401-419, or approved honours courses)
- MGMT 592 (90 point thesis)
Or
- MGMT 404, 430
- three courses from (MGMT 401, 403, 405-418)
- two further courses from (MGMT 401-489, HRIR 401-419, or approved honours courses)
- and either:
- (a) MGMT 530 and 531, or
- (b) One of MGMT 530, 531; 30 further points at 400-level or above, including at least 15 approved points at 500-level.
120-point Master of Commerce
The 120-point MCom in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations or Management follows a previous Bachelor of Commerce with Honours (BCom(Hons)) in the same subject area, or a similar honours degree.
To enrol in the 120-point MCom in Human Resource Management & Industrial Relations, you need to have completed either:
- a BCom(Hons) in HRIR with First Class Honours (or Second Class, Division 1); or
- a similar alternative degree (or the equivalent in extensive and appropriate practical, professional or scholarly experience).
To enrol in the 120-point MCom in Management, you need to have completed either:
- a BCom(Hons) in Management with First Class Honours (or Second Class, Division 1); or
- a similar alternative degree (or the equivalent in extensive and appropriate practical, professional or scholarly experience).
The 120-point Master's degree requires completion of either a 120-point research study (including a literature review, data collection/analysis, findings) presented as a thesis (30,000 to 40,000 words) or a 90-point thesis (25,000 – 30,000 words) plus 30 points of approved courses at 400-level or above.
